This Is His Flat

Exterior - Day - Pinner scrap metal yard

[Pinner Investments]Bev wakes up Vince who is asleep in his car looking well the worse for wear he looks at his watch

BEV
"Its 9:35"
VINCE
"No I'm trying to find out what day it is"

Vince stumbles into the office still wearing what he was in Paris

BEV
"Someone to see you in the office"
VINCE
"Right - Its not her is it ?"
BEV
"no its friend"

[Beverly]Vince is so out of sorts he turns and says

VINCE
"Clean this place up Bev it looks like a bomb hit it"

Interior - Day - Vince's Office

Lennie is sitting waiting and Vince's spirits pick up long enough for a piece of wit

LES
"Christ you look terrible"
VINCE
"Maybe but she's a bloody good secretary"

Lennie persists as Vince goes to wash himself up

LES
"Your eyes look like 2 smarties on a couple of fried eggs"

Vince has not gone home since he got back from Paris

VINCE
"Home ?"
BEV
"to your flat to your wife"
VINCE
"Cant say that I have. Last night I was on the point of going home when I was suddenly taken extremely drunk"
LES
"All is not well chez Pinner"
VINCE
"she goes her way I go mine"
BEV
"You make me sick Couldn't you or Gina just make the teeniest effort to try and save your marriage"

Vince returns drying himself off as he drives Bev out to make some coffee

VINCE
"Bev none of us are perfect"
BEV
"That's true but we don't have to turn it in to a hobby"

As Bev leaves Lennie explains that Les has sent him round to try and find Vince as he has been missing for 48 hours. He was untraceable in Paris as he didn't register in the hotel.

VINCE
"I must have been out I attended lots of business meetings"

Lennie guesses the rest

LES
"Did you bump into Penny ?"
VINCE
"Yes - Many times"
LES
"Did she know"
VINCE
"well she seemed to be aware"
LES
"No Vince I mean did she know that you were a married man"

Vince plays coy and hasn't thought through the implications of her finding out once she was on English soil

LES
"Listen Vin listen"
VINCE
"what"
LES
"Can you hear that ticking sound one day soon that's gonna blow up in your face"

Lennie wants to try to fight to save the marriage

VINCE
"we do nothing but fight the neighbours have named our flat Beirut"

Vince gives a damming account of their life together

VINCE
"She got what she wanted from me I set her up in business .. she doesn't even use her married name she a Ms .. I love Pen"

[Lennie]Lennie is concerned about the massive Pinner empire

LES
"supermarkets - clothes shops you've even got a vineyard ion Portugal. Now when Gina finds out about you and Penny she's gonna take you to the cleaners"
VINCE
"Its alright I've got one of them as well"

Vince decides to have a drink as Bev enters with the coffee - aspirins and letters one from his wife

VINCE
"She's writing to me"

Bev is made to read it out - it says Gina is going away fro a few days

VINCE
"Do they have fashion shows in Swindon"

Bev leaves and whilst Vince pours the drinks they listen to the answer phone

The call from Penny (as previous episode) is always sweetness an light Lennie's insists there will be trouble when she finds out Vince is convinced she already knows and the sweet phone call was in spite of that. His smugness is broken by a second call from Penny (one we have not heard)

VINCE
"She a mature very understanding woman Len"
PENNY
"Vince you bastard"
VINCE
"Strange girl"

Vince asks Lennie for an unnamed favour but he refuses so he folds his arms and look skywards

VINCE
"Oh I wouldn't like to be in my shoes"

Interior - Day - restaurant

Penny is reading through some papers awaiting a client. Vince arrives before the client and Penny is caught wearing her glasses which she removes quickly

PENNY
"get away from me you creep"
VINCE
"How long have you been wearing glasses ?"

Vince has traced her from her office - Penny is fuming

PENNY
"Don't touch me"
VINCE
"Pen - something's wrong isn't it"

Vince tries to calm her down

PENNY
"Take your horrible little reptile hand away from me"

[Penny]Penny tells how she found out that Vince was married

VINCE
"Who told you ?"
PENNY
"my father"
VINCE
"who told him ?"
PENNY
"Mother"
VINCE
"Well who told her"
PENNY
"Good lord your mother"
PENNY
"Rite that woman and her mouth"

Penny is half glad she has found out as she can now appreciate how Vince has lied and used her. He tries to convince her he was sincere

PENNY
"Do piranha bite ?"
VINCE
"I didn't lie to you Pen"
PENNY
"You didn't tell me you were married"
VINCE
"You didn't ask me if I was married"
PENNY
"Given your track record that's hardly the first question that springs to mind"

Vince explains how he kept it from her so as not to spoil the mood

PENNY
"You seemed to be enjoying yourself"
VINCE
"Come on you enjoyed yourself as well"
PENNY
"What on earth gives you that idea ?"
VINCE
"You said so on my answering machine"
PENNY
"Oh - yes - and that's what hurts so much - it was lovely - they were the nicest days I can remember"

Penny is swimming in the romanticism of the few days they spent alone was as they always should have been together. Vince agrees

PENNY
"So you know what I do hate you for - for making the pretence so bloody good."

She is really smitten badly and has obviously taken all Vince's comments to heart

PENNY
"When I think back to that weekend I still cant understand how you did it"
VINCE
"I was just on form Pen"

Eventually Penny summons up the courage (despite not being able to say the word wife) to ask further details of the marriage despite Vince being very non plussed

PENNY
"So who is she ?"
VINCE
"Who ?"
PENNY
"Your w... this person you've become hitched to"
VINCE
"Ah you know Pen no one special"

[Waiter]Penny at first seems superior on finding her name is Gina

PENNY
"yes that's perfect I could imagine you ending up with someone called Gina"

However all is rocked when forcing Vince to describe her he lists her assets

VINCE
"kind of tall - slender - blond hair - blue eyes - long legs - shapely bust - very attractive face - she used to be a fashion model"
PENNY
"Oh I see - what attracted you to her"
VINCE
"Well I suppose I was looking for someone who was different to you"

That does it Penny shuts down the conversation despite Vince's protests yet he still wants to talk tonight. Penny suggests he spends it in with the w word she can not mention

VINCE
"Well that's the thing Pen - she's out of town for a couple of nights"
PENNY
"Oh I see so its bring on the sub"

She flatly refuses to discuss anything more with him - so he suggests talking to Lennie

VINCE
"Talk to me through a go-between"
PENNY
"The only way I'll talk to you is thorough a medium"

The waiter arrives to inform of Penny's real guest arriving - so in a turmoil she agrees to meet Vincent so he'll leave

Exterior - Night - Scrap yard

[Rolls Royce]Vince is late in arriving so Penny gets out and disturbs the watch dog. Vince pulls up and penny can;t help but admire the Rolls he is driving with a car phone. The dog still barks

PENNY
"What's wrong with that thing"
VINCE
"Its a bitch there're always the most vicious"
PENNY
"Really"
PENNY
"Down Daphne - Daphne Down"

[Daphne The Dog]Penny points out that she is not going to fall for Vince's charms

PENNY
"Forget it Zonko in 2 hours or less I shall be back in my own house"
VINCE
"yes .."
PENNY
"Do you understand ?"
VINCE
"yes .."
PENNY
"Good boy"
VINCE
"Do you want to move your car away from the entrance Pen - the lorries won't be able to get in in the morning"
PENNY
"Oh Yes - yes of course"

Interior - Night - Flat corridor

Penny refuses to enter the flat thinking Gina will be around until other people pass her

PENNY
"Do you think they saw me"
I don't care if they did
PENNY
"No but I do care"

Penny nervously follows Vince around and cant relax Vince is made to sit on a single chair drinking the only drink in the house sherry

VINCE
"Happy days"
PENNY
"Don't be silly - so how's married life treating you"
VINCE
"Its a bit like being at a bad party Pen you just can wait for the last record"

[Vincent]Vince rants on about what an affect she is having on him. Penny is quite delighted

PENNY
"Shes doing what I should have done a long time ago - made you suffer"

Penny goes into a long speech about how she has suffered from the French incident

PENNY
"all those things you said to me when you were lying in my ... flat"

She feels betrayed at all the reassuring things Vince has said

PENNY
"I realised most of your lines came from songs - one of them came from a commercial"
VINCE
"I meant every word I said"
PENNY
"you didn't tell me you were married"
VINCE
"You didn't tell me you wore glasses"

Penny's frustration breaks out and Vince tries to reassures her

VINCE
"Some day some how I'll prove it to you"
PENNY
"And I promise this some day somehow I'll get even with you"

Vince leaves a worried Penny in the flat as he goes to the off license. She becomes more agitated by the phone ringing and ends up hiding in the bedroom where she noses around withe her curiosity getting the better of her.

She finds a wardrobe full of elegant clothes and remembering her promise to get even as she viciously chops up all the suits and shirts "He's sure to notice".

The credits roll as Vince drives back from the off license (across the road)

Penny is about to explain when the phone rings and Vince picks it up. It is Lennie wanting to come up

PENNY
"Lennie - Oh why does he have to come here now of all times"
VINCE
"There's not a lot I can do Pen - it is his flat"
